Chances are, you’ve at least heard of synthetic oil.

That doesn’t mean you know anything about it. But don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.

Let’s take a look at what you need to know about synthetic oil and how it differs from conventional oil so you can make an informed decision when it’s time for your next oil change.

What’s the difference?

Synthetic oil is created artificially from chemical compounds.

Some types start out as conventional oil and then are chemically altered to become synthetic.

Others are made from raw materials.

Conventional motor oil comes from naturally-occurring crude oil.

The advantages of synthetic oil

Many auto mechanics will tell you that synthetic oil is the way to go.

Here’s why:

It reduces engine wear, especially when a car is started and driven cold.
It doesn’t degrade as quickly.
From a consumer’s perspective, there’s one big benefit: Less frequent oil changes.

The downside

Upfront, an oil change with synthetic oil will cost you about twice as much as one with conventional oil.

The reason is simple: synthetic oil costs more.

But, in the long run, not having to have your oil changed as frequently should be factored into your decision. It may be cheaper overall to go with synthetic.

Making the choice

So, how do you know if synthetic oil is worth it?

It all depends on how often you change your oil.

If you’re on top of regular oil changes as dictated by your vehicle’s owner’s manual, you don’t necessarily need synthetic oil.

On the other hand, if you’re in the habit of putting it off, synthetic oil may be the way to go.
