The Fundamentals of EV Maintenance

Not only do electric cars not use oil, but they’re roughly 40% cheaper to maintain over their lifespans. So, say goodbye to the notion of an electric car oil change, as well as all the other services associated with engine upkeep. Still, what services remain?

  • Coolant: You’ll need to continue to top your radiator off with coolant in order to regulate the temperatures of your motor and battery.
  • Transmission fluid: Although most EVs feature a single-gear transmission, you’ll still need to lubricate it by replacing your transmission fluid from time to time.
  • Brake Fluid: EVs have brakes, and your brakes’ hydraulic system, calipers, and rotors all need a little juice now and then.
  • Tire Care: You’ll still need to have your wheels balanced and tires rotated.

Unique EV Components

Now that you know that electric cars do not need oil, let’s look at some unique components EVs implement. For starters, they don’t feature a combustion engine and rely entirely on a battery and motor(s) for propulsion. The battery sends an electric current into a magnetic motor, and the electricity causes the magnets in the motor to create a magnetic field. This magnetic field causes the motor to churn, which generates torque and moves your car forward down North Canton streets. Other unique components include charging ports, a thermal regulation system for your battery, and:

  • Onboard charger: This converts any electricity you receive from a charging station into DC power.
  • DC-DC converter: This transforms high-voltage direct current electricity from DC chargers into low-voltage DC power that’s compatible with your vehicle.
